Running Crew

“Cuckoo Participation” Becomes a Major Problem in Marathon Races

Recently, the issue of running crew cuckoo participation has emerged as a growing concern in major marathon events. The term “cuckoo participation” refers to runners who join the official race course without paying the registration fee, much like a cuckoo bird that lays its eggs in another bird’s nest.

Registration fees in marathons are not simply symbolic; they cover critical expenses such as road traffic control, safety management, and event operations. However, some running crews continue to run the course without paying, creating a heavy burden on organizers and raising fairness issues for legitimate participants.

At the Daegu Marathon in April, the official capacity was set at 25,000 runners. Yet, nearly 30,000 people took part, with an estimated 5,000 running without registration. According to organizers, a significant portion of these unauthorized runners were members of running crews.

Ahn Hyo-jin, Secretary General of the Daegu Marathon Association, expressed concern: “As young running crews increase, cuckoo participation is spreading almost like a culture. It not only disrupts the event but also undermines fairness for paying participants.”

“I hope these nuisance cuckoo runners trip, break their teeth, and smash their phones. Serves them right.”

“Just a few days ago, I told someone on the track to keep etiquette, and they immediately blocked me. These running crew troublemakers are everywhere.”

“So when they say running is a hobby anyone can afford, is this what they mean? Hilarious.”

“Cycling events have the same issue. People ride bikes worth thousands of dollars, but still, freeloaders show up. It’s just how it goes.”

“Why do people become foolish in groups? It’s like the larger the crowd, the lower the intelligence.”
